Managed IT or break-fix: which is right for you?

Short answer: Break-fix charges when something breaks; managed IT charges monthly for prevention and support. When each one wins, with a simple way to decide.

Break-fix means you pay by the hour when something breaks. Managed IT means you pay a monthly fee that covers prevention and support. Break-fix is cheaper while nothing goes wrong; managed IT is steadier and catches problems early. Most offices of three or more people are better served by a light managed plan.

Break-fix wins when

  • You are a one- or two-person business with simple needs
  • Your equipment is new and mostly cloud-based
  • You are comfortable doing your own updates and backups

Managed IT wins when

  • Downtime costs you real money
  • Several people share files, email and accounts
  • You want someone watching backups and security settings
  • You prefer a predictable monthly bill

The middle path

Start with a one-time Security Checkup, fix the biggest gaps, then choose hourly help or a plan. You are not stuck either way. Care plans here are month to month.

A simple test

Ask: if our email or files were gone for two days, what would that cost? If the answer is more than a few months of a managed plan, prevention is the better buy.
